Galloway After School Program (GASP):
Young people with developmental challenges may be seen as having limited social and life skills. Their difficulty in expressing themselves can have a negative impact on how their relationships with others, particularly their peers, and many can end up feeling isolated.
The Galloway After School Program, is geared to their special needs, offering activities that improve their socialization and life skills. It provides a safe, structured, and fun environment where they can learn the skills necessary to become more independent. Activities and outings are aimed at developing a sense of cooperation, responsibility and achievement. Life skills topics include cooking, leisure planning, street-proofing, sexuality and relationship building.
The Galloway After School Program is a socialization, life skills, and activity group for East Toronto adolescents who have been diagnosed as being mildly to moderately developmentally challenged, and who require the experience of a peer group to aid them in the development of social and life skills. The program operates two afternoons a week during the school year – approximately seven hours per week. The staffing ratio is one staff member per three youth. The fee of $40 a month ensures the longevity and staffing of the program is not compromised.

Time for the Taking:
Are you a parent or guardian of a developmentally challenged young person between the ages of 12 and 24? Are you finding it hard to locate or keep a qualified parent relief worker? Do you have Special Services at Home Funding?
Like everyone else, parents and guardians of developmentally challenged youth sometimes need time for themselves to run errands, attend meetings, or just relax. Whenever you need time for yourself, East Metro Youth Services can help with a program called Time for the Taking. While you are on your own, your child can spend time having fun and learning with our staff and nine other teens or young adults. Operating out of the Galloway Center, Time for the Taking offers programming that builds and enhances social and life skills. Your child can even learn computer skills! Time for the Taking is flexible. You can reserve sessions in advance when you know you’re going to need a hand. Or you can book more casually, when things come up unexpectedly. If there is an opening, your child is welcome. Right now, Time for the Taking operates on weekends only, but we will soon be able to offer evening sessions during the week, as well. Stay tuned!
Once you register and become a member, you can, with the assistance of an EMYS staff member, create a schedule that works for you and your child. There is a one-time only registration fee of $20. Sessions are eight hours long and cost $70 each. Packages of five sessions are available at a discount. There is a maximum of ten participants per session, so everyone gets the attention he or she needs.
